Coarse dust particles can make it hard for people to breathe and can worsen respiratory ailments, especially in children and older people. The pollution advisories carry several restrictions, according to the Maricopa County AirQuality Department. Open fires, including those in fireplaces or outdoor fire pits, are prohibited, as is off-road vehicle activity.
Officials also encourage people, especially children and anyone with respiratory ailments, to limit exposure to the air outdoors and to limit outdoor activities. Motorists are urged to drive less, carpool and avoid unnecessary idling.
