To the editor:

Proposition 2 is common sense.

We have had heated discussions in our borough about what can or should be done about high concentrations of particulates from wood and coal burning in the wintertime.

On the one hand, it is a health issue, plus we will get into trouble with the Environmental Protection Agency if we don’t do anything about it.

On the other hand, Fairbanksans are independent-minded people who don’t like the government to tell them what to do. Nobody wants to be told that they cannot use their wood stove. We have a wood stove ourselves and would not want to miss it.

Especially in economically difficult times, many people turn to wood as a cheaper heating source, and nobody can blame them for that decision. However, if we do not address air pollution arising from smoke, the EPA is going to get on our backs and force measures on us that may be much less to our liking than those proposed in Proposition 2.

Proposition 2, on the ballot Oct. 4, admirably manages to accommodate both of the above viewpoints. It proposes to ban only the worst-polluting heaters and introduces a mix of modest penalties and high incentives to curb pollution.

We don’t want the same to happen here as in Juneau, where the government imposes bans on all wood burning on certain days. So let’s take our fate in our own hands and solve the problem in a way that makes sense for us by voting for Proposition 2.

Proposition 2, written by concerned residents — people like us — only prohibits wood-fired hydronic heaters and coal burning in the non-attainment area, but on the same token makes sure the borough can’t prohibit the proper use of other heaters like regular wood stoves. This makes a lot more sense than imposing burn bans across the board.

Say yes to Proposition 2, a measure by the people for the people. Learn more at http://www.HealthyAirNow.org
