Fairbanks North Star Borough voters will decide whether to impose emission standards for wood smoke. This is a big issue in Fairbanks, where heating costs are high and wood stoves common. The initiative would also ban outdoor wood-fired boilers, called hydronic heaters, and all coal-burning devices within the areas that don’t meet federal air quality standards.

The EPA is giving the borough until 2014 to meet the air quality standards; if it doesn’t, the federal government could step in.

The ballot initiative is being pushed by a Fairbanks group called Healthy Air Now and state Rep. Tammie Wilson is leading the fight against it.
